On Saturday, March 7th, Cowtown S.K.A.T.E. was invited to Ske:g Himdag Ki: on the Salt River Pima Indian Community Reservation to hold our first Rides for the Rez of the year!

1 Reservation, 13 Zip Codes, 147 Kids.

With almost half of attendees as first time skaters, it was a day filled with new experiences, community and fun.

It was amazing to see the diversity across generations and cultures come together through the love of skateboarding.

When asked "Why Do You Love Skateboarding?", participants said this:

  • "Skateboarding helps me be creative"

  • "It helps me get around"

  • "Skateboarding helps me manage my stress"

  • "It helps me learn new things and new tricks"

  • "I've made friends through skating"

  • "Skateboarding makes exercise more fun"

This Rides for the Rez included skate clinics provided by Push Forward, best trick contest and event hosting by Seven Layer Army and food, music and venue provided by Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community's Community Recreational Services.

Rides for the Rez is part of our Opening the Door initiative - bringing skateboarding directly to communities through free skate clinics, hands-on support, and complete skateboards provided through our Skateboard Angel program, funded by our donors.

This Rides for the Rez, we learned that 81% of attendees did NOT own a skateboard. Those that did have a skateboard traded in their bruised board for a brand new complete to keep them moving. By the end of the day, each child went home with a quality, professional grade skateboard that will help them stay active for years to come.

Shout out to Ethan and the SRPMIC Adaptive Program for helping make this event a success, and for recognizing the importance that skateboarding can have in the lives of children. Thank you to our partners and all of the volunteers who came out to support our kids living stronger, healthier lives through skateboarding.
