On behalf of our donors, we’re proud to say 264 kids received skateboards at our recent Boards for the Barrio event at Perry Park - one of the largest board distributions we’ve hosted to date. For many of those kids, it was their first board and the beginning of their skateboarding journey.

Boards for the Barrio is part of our Opening the Door program and serves as a Skateboard Angel delivery on behalf of our donors, getting skateboards directly into the hands of kids who need them most. The goal is simple: remove the biggest barriers that keep kids from experiencing skateboarding in the first place - access to a skateboard and access to places to skate.

Getting a board under a kid’s feet is the first step.Having a place nearby to skate is what makes it stick.

In this video, Ryan Lay, Haley Changet, Tony Salinas, and Councilwoman Washington speak to the importance of small neighborhood skate amenities - skate spots - and how they can help bridge the gap between large regional skateparks and the communities around them.

Simple things like ledges, rails, banks, and small plazas in neighborhood parks bring skateboarding closer to home. They activate public spaces, create positive environments for youth, and give kids a place to start, progress, and connect with others through skateboarding.

Events like Perry Park show what’s possible when access to skateboards and access to infrastructure come together in the same community.

Sometimes the smallest skate spots can make the biggest impact.

Special thanks to Phoenix Arts & Culture, City of Phoenix Parks & Rec, and Spinatos for helping us enrich kids lives!
